The Attic Tote Field Guide: What's Actually Worth Money

Every house has one. The tote in the attic, the box on the garage shelf, labeled something like "KIDS TOYS" in Sharpie that's older than the kids are now. You walk past it twice a year, think "I should deal with that," and don't.

Fair enough — dealing with it sounds like work. So here's a field guide to what's probably inside, and which of it is actually worth money.

The usual suspects (and their real value)

• Action figures, loose, slightly heroic condition. Star Wars, TMNT, Power Rangers, WWF, Batman. Loose figures still sell, and certain characters and waves surprise people. A tote-bottom layer of figures is never worthless.
• The video game layer. There's almost always a handheld, a tangle of controllers, and a few games that slid to the bottom. This is often the most valuable stratum in the tote — especially Nintendo anything and any Pokémon title.
• Playsets and vehicles, 80% complete. Missing pieces hurt value but don't erase it. Collectors complete sets; buyers like us price the lot as-is.
• Happy Meal / promo toys, some still bagged. The sealed ones from the 90s have a real collector market. Don't laugh them into the donate bag.
• Plush with tags (or without, if it's the right character), trading cards (check for Pokémon, again), and board games with the good licenses.

What decides the money

Three things, roughly in order: what it is (character and franchise beat condition), how complete it is, and how it survived the attic (heat-warped and sun-faded is the killer, not "played with"). Complete-in-box anything jumps in value, but nobody's tote is complete-in-box. That's fine.
