First Friday Lights

# First Friday Lights

You can tell the week without a calendar in this metro. The bands started rehearsing after dinner somewhere you can't quite see. The grocery store is selling team-color everything by the door. And come Friday at dusk, whole neighborhoods will tilt in the same direction, drawn toward light towers you can see from three streets away.

First game week. The season the whole city keeps together.

The sound of it

Every neighborhood within a mile of a stadium knows the Friday soundtrack: the PA voice you can never quite make out, the drumline that arrives on the wind in pieces, the crowd noise that swells and drops like weather. You don't have to attend the game to attend the game. Porches all over the metro get the broadcast for free, slightly delayed, all fall.

And there's the traffic liturgy — the 6:40 brake lights, the school lots filling, the caravan home after, honking if it went well. It's the most reliably communal thing the metro does, and it costs nothing to love.

Meanwhile, back at the house

But this page has always had a soft spot for a different Friday-night character: the kid brother who stayed home.

The bleachers get the family. The couch gets him. And for three glorious hours, the house is his — the good TV, the good spot, the volume at a number normally requiring negotiation, and nobody in the doorway saying it's someone else's turn. Some of the great save files of our childhoods were built on autumn Fridays, in empty houses, while a stadium roared faintly through the window screen.

If that was you: you know the exact feeling of hearing the garage door at 10:30 and executing the fastest console-shutdown-and-look-casual routine of your life. The skills we built.

No pitch tonight

Fridays like this aren't for selling anything, and we won't pretend otherwise. The tubs and shelves will still be there Saturday; the season only opens once.

So, a Friday question instead, from our porch to yours: whose lights can you see from your house? And while we're taking testimony — were you a bleachers kid or a stay-home kid? The comments are open, the bands are warming up, and the whole metro's on the same schedule until November. Enjoy the opener, OKC. 🏈
