Moving Season in the OKC Metro: Don't Haul It Twice

The first of August turns the OKC metro into one long truck-loading day. Leases turn over, students move in ahead of the semester, and for about a week every apartment complex in the metro has a U-Haul parked sideways somewhere.

If that's you this weekend, here's a small piece of advice worth actual money: open the boxes you're about to load, not the ones you already unpacked.

The boxes that never get opened

Everybody who has moved more than twice knows the phenomenon. There's a box that came from the last place, still taped, that will go on this truck and into the next closet without ever being opened. Then it'll do it again in two years.

The contents are almost always the same categories:

• Games and consoles from a setup that got retired when a newer one arrived.
• A bin of toys or action figures that survived a childhood-bedroom cleanout and has been in storage ever since.
• Cables, controllers and accessories in a shopping bag inside the box.
• A stack of cases — some with discs, some without.

It's heavy, it takes up truck space, you're paying (in gas, in trips, in friends' Saturdays) to move it, and it's going straight back into a closet.

Ninety seconds per box

You don't need to inventory anything. Cut the tape, look, and ask one question: is this going to get used at the new place?

If the answer is genuinely yes, tape it back up and load it. If the answer is "well, someday" — that's the box worth photographing before it goes on the truck.

What that's worth

More than most people assume, and the odd stuff matters. Original controllers and power supplies, memory cards and adapters, boxed anything, manuals, whole tubs of loose games. Working or not-quite, complete or incomplete. Whole collections and single shelves both.

We'll look at a wide photo, ask about anything we can't make out, and come back with one real cash number for the lot. No item-by-item haggling, no bait offer that shrinks at the door, no obligation.
